Over the last 2 months we have had the privilege of releasing our first EP and our first video. And although there are 5 tunes on this EP, our most notable is “Born With The Horns”. As of today, it has the most streams on Spotify, and growing views on youtube. It continues to get attention and grow our fanbase beyond our backyard.
When we first came together Jared and Nicohl had already written “Born With The Horns” and shared a demo with some industry pros. They were extremely encouraging and believed it had a lot of market potential. We agreed and put effort and energy into getting it where it is now. Sometimes songwriting comes easy and what you write the first time sticks, but more often than not a good song needs rewrites and editing to really make it shine. That’s exactly what we did- rewrote, tweaked, edited, got feedback, and did it again. The form was edited and the words were slightly changed to flow better. It’s all the little things that ultimately make a big difference. Then we went to record.
The scream I did at the beginning of this tune has gotten a lot of love, but it was one of the last things we added. Coming at this genre from a jazz/blues/classical background did not prepare me for screaming. It was something way out of my wheelhouse. But Jared heard it for the song and I was game to try and make it happen. Ironically the drummer coached the vocalist! LOL I think he did a great job and we got something incredible recorded. The positive comments keep coming in. Even Lorraine Lewis of Vixen fame gave us kudos with an instagram post on her page. Thanks Lorraine!!
In the middle of the tune we pay homage to hard rock by quoting three classic tunes. This was a really hard choice to narrow down, and in another post we can wax rhapsodic about our favorite hard rock classics. But, in order to keep the song at a reasonable length we just chose three. In case you didn’t catch these nods the first time around they are: “Heaven and Hell” by Black Sabbath, “Man on a Silver Mountain” by Rainbow, and "Heads are Gonna Roll" by Judas Priest.
The inspiration for this tune was Jared and Nicohl’s niece. She is still young, but even as a toddler she was born to rock and roll. She’s not drawn to it because of the devilish qualities that rock throws around, but because of the energy, life, and feeling that you get from being loud and free. Rock has a bad reputation for its association with drugs, devil worship, sex, and all manner of immoral activity. Granted, historically speaking there’s good reason for this, however it’s time to redeem the music and allow it to be celebrated for what it does best: rebellion of silence and constraint. Let’s be loud, proud, and free. Throw up your horns till the bell doth toll.
