Saturday was long, hot, and thick with anticipation. We were at Hard Truth Hills for our second Battle of the Bands of the year: Rumble on the Rocks. Coming off our 3rd-place win at the ABATE of Indiana competition back in April, our expectations were sky-high. Our fans came out in force, we delivered a drop-the-mic performance that had the crowd screaming, and we felt unstoppable.
Then the votes were tallied.
When they announced the winners, my heart dropped like an egg on the kitchen floor. Despite our best efforts, we didn't make it to the finals. At least not this time.
I hate losing. I spent the next day drifting in and out of full "wet cat mode," miserably processing all the things we could have done differently. But once the funk cleared, hindsight brought some real perspective. I can guarantee this won't be our last competition—personally, I'm a total sucker for the gleam of a glossy trophy—but there's way more to gain from these events than just external validation.
Here is how we actually won this weekend:
1. New Audiences (and New Friends)
I'd rather play for a packed room than a handful of people, and battles are always packed. Because of fan voting, every band brings their posse to tip the scales. The magic happens when those people become our fans, too.
We passed out a ton of free merch on Saturday and collected every email address we could rustle up. Our new friend Grace even came over to get our autographs! The more eyes we get on us, the more SUSTAYN grows.
2. High-Value Networking
When you're gigging constantly, it's nearly impossible to see other bands play or meet fellow musicians. Competitions give us the chance to watch a half dozen bands all at once and talk shop while loading out. In fact, we're already working on booking a show two hours away with one of the incredible bands we met this weekend.
3. Forcing Us to Get Precise
Battles force you to be ruthless with efficiency. Working within a strict time limit means knowing exactly how long every song runs, what we're going to say between them, and how we move on stage. The more intentional we are with tempos, transitions, and stage flow, the tighter we become. Those skills carry over into every single show we play.
4. A Rallying Cry for Our Community
Fan voting is often the difference between winning and losing, which gives our community something to fight for together. Our fans are a huge part of everything we do, and this weekend put that front and center. Watching people show up, vote, cheer, and lose their minds in the crowd is inspiring. We're all in this together.
5. The Potential Reward
Of course, the prize packages don't hurt. Many competitions offer cash, festival slots, and opening opportunities that can propel a band forward.
Winning is always the goal. But even when we don't take home the plastic trophy, we still walk away with new fans, new friends, invaluable experience, and a tighter set than we had on Friday.
At the end of the day, that's what SUSTAYN is all about. We're living what we preach—collecting experiences, taking chances, and staying alive while we're alive.
