It's amazing to me to look back on certain situations in my life and realize how incredibly important timing is. For many things there is usually a small window of time where something can either come together or be lost forever. In those terms you might wonder what amazing things you've missed out on that you have no idea about. But I choose to focus on the things that have happened, and revel in them being truly miraculous.
In spring of 2023, I was bored with what I was doing musically. My mentor and duo partner had retired, my old band members had all drifted on to different projects, and my day job was less than satisfying. I was reaching out to anything and everything trying to get an idea of what to do next. I had spent the previous year focused on songwriting, cowriting, connections in big Nashville, and solo work. But as good and rational as it sounded, it didn't inspire me. I was still trying new things and looking for the illusive “I'll know when I find it” thing. I can't speak for the Asher's, but I suspect they were in a similar situation of transition. Timing is everything, and this was our time.
After our initial meeting, I called and agreed to meet them at their studio. Driving over the GPS kept dropping and I was wondering if that was a sign that we should turn around. Luckily we didn't! That first night together we wrote “What are you Waiting For.” I immediately fell in love with the intensity and energy of Jared's playing and more importantly we clicked. We've been making music ever since.
It's a strange partnership really. We don't run in any of the same musical circles. There are no overlaps in our friend groups or hobbies. We've taken completely different life paths. But fundamentally we have so much in common. We may never have some together at any other time or place. I'm sure others would call this accidental coincidence, but I don't believe in coincidence. This, my friends, is a miracle.
